Community Radios Urged to Embrace Digitalization

The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has dared  the country’s community radio stations to go digital if they are to reach a wider audience and remain relevant in this digital era.

MACRA Deputy Director of Broadcasting Kelton Masangano, was speaking Monday while opening a two-day Community Radio Reporters Digital Training in Mponela, Dowa.

Masangano said digitalized radio services would help the stations reach a broader audience, report in real-time, increase interaction through audience feedback, and attract more advertisers.

“Besides these benefits, it will also help audiences access reliable news sources amid the influx of fake online news sources that spread misleading information,” said Masangano.

Symon Kaluwa, a digital technician at Kasungu Community Radio who participated in the training described the training as timely, saying many stations have already started feeling the impact of lagging behind in digitalization.

MACRA conducted the two-day training to equip community radio reporters and digital technicians with skills in online article writing, website posting, and fake news detection.
